Scheduled updates in Epicenter Server do not start

Problem: Epicenter distributes updates if you click the "Send Now" button, but scheduled updates do not work.

Cause: Task is not running in the Task Scheduler.

Solution: There are three common causes of this problem:

  1. If you are running under Windows 2012R2 or later or Windows 8.1 or later, you may be encountering an undocumented interaction between Outlook and Windows. If you restart Epicenter, look at the last line in the log to see if it says, "The last scheduled update failed. To fix the problem, either log out or close all Office applications when scheduled updates are being sent." If you see this message, then follow the directions in the error message and the problem will be resolved.

  2. Reboot. If an Epicenter Server process hung, then Task Scheduler will not start any new tasks.

  3. When you create the task, you must use the exact same username and password for the Epicenter task that you do for the account under which Epicenter is running. In other words, if you log in as "JohnDoe", then you must use the "JohnDoe" account when Epicenter requests credentials to schedule the task. If you use anyone else, then the Outlook profile cannot be found. To reenter the credentials, do this:

    • Edit the settings for the task and set updates to be "Manual."
    • Close Epicenter Server
    • Go to Control Panel > User Accounts > Manage Your Credentials.
    • Under Generic Credentials, click Epicenter Server.
    • Click "Remove from vault."
    • Restart Epicenter Server
    • Go back to Settings for the Task and reschedule the Task.
    • It should ask for new credentials.

  4. If your Exchange Server requests your username and password when you start Outlook, then scheduled updates will not work. Leaving Outlook running will not help because scheduled Epicenter updates do not run on the Desktop. You must configure Outlook to run without requesting the username and password. If you recently installed Outlook, restart Outlook to see if it asks for your username and password. See the section in the manual on Outlook Passwords.
