Gmail error: Can not authenticate to IMAP server

Symptom: You are converting email to Gmail and you get the error, "Can not authenticate to IMAP server: [ALERT] Please log in via your web browser: (Failure)"


First, Check that IMAP is turned on for Gmail as described in the link provided in the error message:

Assuming IMAP is turned on, are you using 2 factor authentication?
If yes, you'll need to generate an ASP (application-specific password.) at as described under, "How to generate an App password".
If no, enable Less Secure Apps at
